I AM EXCITED TO ANNOUNCE THAT HELLO VELO HAS IT'S FIRST GROUP RIDE!! IT'S CALLED THE AMTRAK CENTURY AND IT IS A RIDE FROM IRVINE TO SAN DIEGO, WHERE YOU CATCH THE AMTRAK FOR YOUR RIDE BACK. (DETAILS BELOW!)
Registration opens 7AM on Sunday morning June 22 and it may close within 30 minutes as this is a very popular ride. I plan to register at 7 :) The site does say that someone can register for you but they would need to login as you.
First, The events person (Michael Lee) at the OCW created a "group" for Hello Velo that riders will see in the Bike Club drop down list when registering for the actual event. You may have received an email after it was setup (I don't know).
Club name: Hello VeloClub president and main contact: Judi Shapiro ThielMobile: 949-422-4242
Second, The Amtrak Century is Saturday, Sep 6, 2014. There are two options for the event: Train ride back ($86) or no train ($56). I know $86 sounds high but it does include one fun train ride back which if everyone selects "Hello Velo" when registering, then we will all be on the same train car - woohoo!
If you did not know:
Ride starts at Irvine Amtrak (no mass start so we can leave anytime btw 530a-7am for example. Slower riders <15mi avg should leave before 630am), Riders drop off a cooler and travel bag which are tagged and driven by truck to SD (there are guidelines for size of coolers on the webpage). When we arrive in SD , we grab our stuff and get cleaned up/changed before getting on the train. Our bikes are blanket wrapped and hauled back to the Irvine station. Rest stop info is all listed on the website.
Third, Riders need to setup an account with NGIN (its like Active.com) before they can actually register. This should be done before Sunday, 6/22. The details to setup an account (include a link) are explained on the following page under the heading: BEFORE REGISTRATION NON OCW MEMBERS http://www.ocwheelmen. org/page/show/418585-amtrak- century
