Like a midnight kiss, resolutions are a New Year's tradition. Many Americans make them, but not nearly as many keep them.
Dr. Cathy Connors, a clinical psychologist in Sacramento, says people naturally want to improve themselves, but often set unrealistic goals.
"I think it's important to have goals and to be aware of changes you want to make. But I think it's the intention behind that, to come from a compassionate place and to understand that change is a process. It's not going to happen overnight and you're going to have setbacks," Connors said.
Connors suggested making broad, open-ended New Year's resolutions rather than something too specific.
She also said to find a support system to help and encourage you along the way and to forgive yourself when you misstep. Celebrating small successes on the way to reaching your goal will keep you motivated.
